A recent story about a large whale skeleton found in the Thames reminded me of this bad boy that normally sits in my study.
My dad found this and several other bones on a beach in Donegal several years ago. This bone is the atlas, the first cervical vertebra. Those big ovals either side are the articular surfaces that interface with the base of the skull. The spinal cord goes down the big hole in the middle.
